Sussex Taps — A True Local Industry
Established in 1997, creating taps using rigorous methods pioneered and refined by the company,
Sussex is a true local industry.
We were kindly invited to visit Sussex, a manufacturing facility in Melbourne’s North, and were provided a tour of the facility by owner Vanessa Katsanevakis.
Spanning three warehouses that encompass metal polishing, a metal foundry, and manufacture assembly and dispatch across 2400 sq metres; the company employs over 60 staff across a range of specialist trades, who produce more than 500000+ components each year.
It was evident | The investment, care and innovation committed to each piece made.
Sussex are responsible for each production process that combines to make their product. This level of accountability is tangible throughout the company. A good example being their approach to material processing. The primary material of each tap is solid brass. By running a foundry and manufacturing facility, this material can be recycled (re-melted and extruded back into solid brass bars) within the business. The capture of the material is sourced throughout the manufacturing process, as ‘off-cuts’ or excess from drilling, as whole component pieces with defect, or as unsold product component. So sensible, we love it!
Sussex care that the tap in your home is worthy of its place. Like Cantilever, at each stage of production, a simple and practical quality control system is practiced. On the lookout for the tiniest flaw, Sussex’s QC system defines a component destiny – if perfect; to become your tap. If damaged; to become solid brass bar again. The economic sensibility inherent in this process benefits everyone, by creating sustainable products, reducing costs by valuing material, and ensuring only high-quality outcomes.
‘ His pursuit of excellence and dedication to quality stems from his training as a watchmaker and later as a jeweller. To this day we uphold his vision and believe in quality without compromise.'
Vanessa Katsanevakis
When considering the challenges in our industry, Vanessa recognises that ‘Sometimes the nature of manufacturing can be a big beast that isn’t highly adaptable’- the turning circle is wide if a change of direction is needed to meet opportunity.
However, history proves that such commitment can be rewarded: Sussex Founder Nico Van Putten (Vanessa's Father) started the business when he saw the opportunity within his existing business capabilities.
The Sussex legacy has created a balance of bold ingenuity, trade integrity, and market understanding within the business and proves that the right mindset creates a well-spring of opportunity, for everyone. Sussex has created a competitive edge and sought-after products, by recognising their point of difference as a local manufacturer as a strength. Built on years of practical experience; Sussex responds to the demands of creating a product with design integrity and market flexibility remarkably well.
Like Cantilever, Sussex create products with design and material integrity, combined with the flexibility of a user-centred service that offers curated customisation. This is a mind-set that creates new possibilities, for everyone to enjoy, including you.
